Facebook's scale problem?

I have close to 5000 friends in my facebook account. Facebook does not allow me to add more friends. I guess they have design issues related to this.

Let me give you and example. If I want to do something (say tagging a photo) which requires a list of names, it is so slow. It tries to download the list of all friends that I have (including their icons / avatars). I could imagine what 5000 friends will do. This is even worse with slow internet connection like what I have (and perhaps what other people have in developing regions).

Imagine if I have 10.000 friends :) and this is possible. I've been ignoring friend requests because I just couldn't add more friends. Currently there are more than 500 requests waiting. Almost all of them are legitimate requests. And why I get all these friend requests? Well, I hate to admit it but I do quite a bit of talk (to univesities' students, etc.) and in each talk there are more than 100 people. If 10% of them want to be friends with me, than 10.000 friends is within reach.

And I'll have more (scalability) problems ...

Clearly there should be a better way to do this. I don't know whether somebody in Facebook is looking at this.

I saw the presentation of behind-operation-whale of Twitter, they seemed to manage in queues of event instead of queries (assuming FB is using the later). The full-blown FB web interface might've been designed for places with bandwidth luxury (?)

So, FB should change their motto to connecting people until 5000

I guess the majority of users will never face like this. But, still ... it needs to be redesigned.

Himbauan Kepada Hacker & Cracker Indonesia & Malaysia

Band progressive rock baru?

Lepas dari yang serius-serius sebentar. Kita ke musik lagi.

Terus terang saya tadinya mulai merasa bahwa musik progressive rock bakalan mati. Seperti lirik dari lagu band Asia - "Rock and Roll Dream":

When I see your faces from the limousine. No chance of our survival...

Tapi setelah saya mendengarkan The Flower Kings, harapan tumbuh lagi.

Meski, ada lagu bootleged live show mereka yang kedodoran membawakan lagu "Firth of Fifth" nya Genesis. Ternyata band besar bisa kedodoran juga.

Repotnya, mus…

news from the trenches: acknowledgement, award, and more work to do

It's time to post some news...

The 15 September 2004 edition of Swa Magazine listed me as one of maestro in specific field. In my case, they put me under IT security expert. Wow! I didn't know this until somebody told me to buy the magazine. (Here's the page scanned from the magazine.)

I was also awarded IGOS award. IGOS is "Indonesia Goes Open Source," a movement lead by Research and Technology Ministry in Indonesia. I didn't go to the celebration since I was sick at that time. I am not sure whay I was awarded though. I thought my contribution to the open source community is still minimal.

New schoolyear has been started. It's time to teach classes. I am teaching two classes; Introduction to Programming (with Object Oriented) and System Security (grad course). Meanwhile, I've got new students working on their theses.

On the University R&D side, my term as the Director of IT Research has ended. I am glad. I was not too happy with the position since…
